There are four fishing rigs types that have multiple variations that we will talk about on our website and they are a fixed sinker fishing rigs, slip sinker fishing rigs, a fixed bobber fishing rigs, and a slip bobber fishing rigs. For more details on some great deals and information on most of the fishing rigs we have listed visit basspro or Cabela’s online.

There are statics that support the fact that about three fourths of all game fish that are caught in freshwater and saltwater are caught with live or natural baits. That it is why it is so important to pick the right fishing rigs. Even the pros will switch to tipping their artificial baits with live bait when the fishing get tough. But to be honest if you do not learn to sellect the right fishing rigs for your live baits properly you lower chances of catching fish drastically. But don’t get scared off because you don’t need to learn to use different fishing rigs for every type of bait. The four fishing rigs we are going to talk about are very versatile and can be used for wide variety of baits and different fishing situations with minor modifications.

For example you can use slip bobber fishing rigs to catch fish species from bluegill from small ponds on wax worms or red worms, to catching monster catfish or northern pike using baits 12 inches long or bigger! Al you have to do is change the size of the components used to make up your slip bobber fishing rigs and you are in business to catch any size fish. You still have to learn your baits for very special applications but the majority of natural baits will work well with the fishing rigs we have listed.

Fixed Sinker Fishing Rigs

Fixed sinker fishing rigs are designed to not be able to slip when a fish swims away with your bait. These type of fishing rigs are used large fish that are not effected by a little line resistance. When you detect a bite with fixed sinker fishing rigs set the hook immediately. There are a number of different fixed sinker fishing rigs that are used to catch fish in different fishing situations. Most different fishing situations use a different type of sinker. Look bellow to see our listing of different fixed sinkers.

Slip Sinker Fishing Rigs

Slip sinker fishing rigs are designed for fish that are sensitive to any line resistance. When you use these type of fishing rigs a fish can take the bait bait and move away without feeling any resistance from the line. Once the fish starts moving away with the bait in it’s mouth you set the hook. There are a number of different slip sinker fishing rigs that are used to catch fish in different fishing situations. Most different fishing situations use a different type of sinker. Look bellow to see our listing of different slip sinkers.

fixed bobber Fishing Rigs

Fixed bobber fishing rigs are designed so that the fish taking your bait feels very little resistance when they take your bait. The key to having a correctly balanced fixed bobber rig is to match a proper size split shot or jig size with the size of the bobber you use. You want the weight of your bait and the weight of the jig or split shot to be enough to just barely keep your bobber aflot. When a fish takes your bait it feels no resistance from the bobber . Fixed bobber fishing rigs are used allot when fishing for panfish and any gamefish that can be caught at shallow depths. The disadvantage of fixed bobber rigs is that you can only set the depth as deep as the length of pole you are using.

Slip Bobber Fishing Rigs We Use

slip bobber fishing rigs

Slip bobber Fishing Rigs

Slip bobber fishing rigs are designed to be used for adjustable deep depths that are much deeper then the length of your fishing rod. Slip boober fishing rigs are designed to be easy to cast. Slip boobers use a bobber stop and a bead that will stop the bobber at a set depth. These type of fishing rigs can be used to catch small or large fish.

Section # 1 Selecting the right sinker for your fishing rigs.

Fixed Sinkers

1 These football-shaped rubber-grip lead sinkers have a rubber core and two tabs on each end of the sinker. The line is placed in the sinker’s groove, and then the tabs are twisted in opposite directions, wrapping the line around the rubber core. When the tabs are twisted in reverse, the line is released. Rubber Core Sinkers have many applications, but most importantly, Rubber Core Sinkers can quickly be added or removed without nicking or otherwise degrading you fishing line.

2 (Picture Not Shown) Dog ear sinkers are similar in shape to the rubber core sinker but have no rubber. They have a tab on each end of the sinker to wrap around the line.

3 Reusable Split-Shot Weights are made of 100% pure soft lead. Uniform shot has a deep, centered slit for maximum hold

4 (Picture Not Shown) Thin wall tubing sinkers are made by pouring lead down surgical tubing or small dia aluminum tubing, and then inserting a barrel swivel at one end so it is perpendicular to the tube. one end of the barrel swivel ties to the your line and the other you tie your leader and hook. This type of sinker is used when fishing snaggy cover.

5 Bell or bank sinker, used for dropper rigs for deep water, and bank fishing.

6Pyramid Sinkers are a practical fishing rig choice when fishing water with sandy or muddy bottoms, swift currents and rough conditions. The 4-sided design of pyramid weights resists tumbling allowing your bait fishinf rigs to get in place and stay there. Pyramid Sinkers cast well, sink quickly and won’t damage your line.

7 Bead Chain Keel sinkers are used to minimize line twist, and are commonly used for trolling and deep water live bait presentations where you want to eliminate line twist.

8 Bead Chain sinkers are used to minimize line twist, and are commonly used for trolling and deep water live bait presentations where you want to eliminate line twist.

9 (Picture not shown) Bait walker sinkers are used for rocky bottoms and a favorite tackle accessory of the walleye angler. This sinker type is looks like a bottom bouncing sinker accept the bait walker sinker does not have the wire extending past the end of the sinker.

10 Bottom bouncing sinkers are used for rocky bottoms and a favorite tackle accessory of the walleye angler. This sinker type gives your bait a lot of action.

Slip Sinkers

1 The walker slip sinker is one of the most common slip sinkers used to build a slip sinker rig. These sinkers are quite commonly used to build slip sinker fishing rigs for catching walleye and catfish.

2 The egg sinker is a general purpose slip sinker that can be used in just about all fishing situations. One very common use is when you are fishing sandy or muddy bottoms. The egg sinker is shown above in our example of slip sinker fishing rigs designed for catfishing.

3 The disk sinker is used specifically on slip sinker fishing rigs to resist drifting or rolling were there is a current. These sinkers are ideal when fishing rivers or lakes with heavy currents. The teardrop-shaped No Roll Sinkers’ low-profile holds your bait in place when other types of sinkers would otherwise get caught in the current. No Roll Sinkers also work great in high-wind conditions, which is very useful when you are fishing for catfish.

4 Bullet sinkers are normally used for fishing a special slip sinker fishing rig through weedy cover. Bullet sinkers are commonly used for nightcrawler live bait or artifical nightcrawler fishing rigs, commonly used for bass fishing.

5 The most common quick change sinkers styles are the bottom walker and the bass sinker. The advantage of using quick change or clip on sinkers is to be able to change the size of your fishing rigs weight quickly when your fishing situation changes.

6 No-Snag Slip Sinkers are for fishing rocks, brush, weedbeds, stump fields, and other rig-eating places. No-Snag Slip Sinkers offer a snag-free alternative for Carolina rigging or live bait presentation, gliding over heavy cover without tumbling, twisting, or affecting bait presentation and action.

7 The slip bouncer is used for snaggy bottoms and normally is purchased as a quick change type of sinker. These type of slip sinkers work great for fishing rigs for trolling or drifting spinners, rigs, flutter spoons or shallow-running cranks right in the strike zone. The glide over cover without hanging up, but also keep you touching the bottom. These sinkers are great for walleye fishing.

Section # 2 Selecting the right hook type for your fishing rigs.

Selecting the right hook for the right fishing situation is very important. For example if you were fishing for bluegills you sure would not want to use a 6/0 hook that is commonly used for large catfish. You would be more suited to select a small number 12 to 4 hook size. To understand how you select a hook size lets talk hooks for a minute.

Hooks sizes have a number associated with them that reflects the hooks gap. The hooks gap is measured from the point of the barb to the hooks shank. When you are selecting a small hook the size of the hook decreases as the number of the hook increases. for example a number 12 hook is a very small hook. Large hooks increase in size as the number increases. Also large hooks have a added /0 “aught” sign associated with them. for example a number 1 hook is smaller then a 1/0 hook. or a 2/0 hook is smaller then a 3/0 hook.

Now there are other things that describe hooks like shank type, types of eyes and the hook style. We won’t discuss these descriptions here. We will provide a simple break down of hook size ranges for specific types of fish. for example the best hooks to use for panfish are number 12 to number 4 hooks.

Floater hooks

We thought we would also mention types of floater hooks that are used for live bait fishing situations were you want your bait to float off the bottom. There are basically 4 different types of these types of hooks.

1 Soft bodied floating jig with a stinger hook for fishing for soft biters such as walleyes and yellow perch.

2 Soft bodied floating jig that is designed to have a natural bait feel to the fish when taking the bait. works great for smallmouth bass , walleyes and yellow perch.

3 Styrofoam ball, held in front of the hook by a bobber stop.

4 Hard bodied floating jig.

Selecting the right hook size for your fishing rigs.

Below you will find a quick reference guide that comes in handy when want to design the the type of fishing rigs you plan to build.

  • Fish Type / Hook Size
  • Smallmouth Bass ——— / 6 – 1

Section # 3 Selecting the right bobber For your Fishing Rigs.

Slip Bobber Examples:

1

Super sensitive slip bobbers are thin pencil looking like bobbers that are super sensitive. they slide up you line through a hole at the tip of the bobber. You need to have a bead and bobber stop to use this type of slip bobber. These fishing rig bobbers work best for super light biters such as yellow perch in late fall months.

2

Lighted slip bobbers are used for night fishing. There are a few different types of these bobbers and they come in a variety of sizes, but they all have the same effect. They have some light source that is visible at some distances for night fishing.

3 Tube style slip bobber which is adjusted by moving the bobber stop up and down the line.

4 Removable slip bobbers are a type of slip boober that are split down the side so they can be removed from the line.

5 The large cigar shaped slip bobber is used mainly to fish for large game fish such as large blue catfish. and also used when fishing saltwater offshore.

Fixed Bobber Examples:

1

Casting bubbles are closely associated with a fly fishing for trout fishing rigs. Casting bubbles are unique because you can fill them partially with water so you can cast longer distances. with a dry fly or a live bait presentation.

2 (Picture Not Shown) Peg – on Bobbers are very small bobbers made out of soft or hard Styrofoam an are either split down the side or are hollow to allow hooking to your fishing line. Both types are fixed onto the line using a small wood peg. These type of bobbers are often used on fishing rigs when fishing for panfish such as crappie.

3

Casting bobbers have a internal or external weight manufactured into the bobber so you can cast longer distances.

4 Clip – on bobbers are often used for fishing rigs to fish for panfish such as bluegills where you are constantly adjusting the depth you are fishing.

5 Spring lock bobbers are often used for fishing for crappie when using a cane pole.

The selection of the right fishing rigs is very important especially when you are fishing with live bait.
