How to Ice Fish: Live Bait for Ice Fishing, Selecting Shiners and Worms for Ice Fishing
www.oceanstatetackle.com How to ice fish details selecting and using live bait for ice fishing. Selecting the right sized shiners , minnows and worms for the species you are targeting when ice fishing is important. Trout, salmon and panfish like yellow perch and crappy prefer smaller baits. Small and small medium shiners, trout worms, meal worms and dillies are highly effective baits for trout and panfish when jigged or fished with tip ups. Live baits are best fished with light tackle to ensure the most natural presentation. Ice fishing with Dacron or Squidding line and tip ups requires monofilament or fluorocarbon leaders. light tackle ice fishermen often use 2, 4, or 6 pound test and hooks as small as size 16 , 14 to size 6. The bait presents much better to naturalized and wild fish with lighter leaders and terminal tackle. Bass fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass through the ice with tip ups is best done with medium sized shiners. Snelled or loose octopus or bait holder hooks from size 4 to size 1/0 are used for these fish. Northern Pike and Musky fishing on ice employs large shiners or minnows up to 7 or 8 Inches long. These are fished live or dead with heavy fluorocarbon or steel leaders and hooks from 1/0 to 3/0 to land the toothy Pike or Musky.
